Acting State Secretary Alda Vanaga: Latvia and Portugal have good cooperation on student exchange
On 16 July 2018, the Acting State Secretary Alda Vanaga welcomed the new Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Portugal to Latvia, Henrique Silveira Borges, as part of his accreditation visits.
The officials discussed bilateral relations between the two countries as well as their cooperation in the EU and NATO. Alda Vanaga thanked Portugal for its contribution to the Baltic Air Policing mission and highlighted potential for developing cooperation in education: she pointed out that successful cooperation in student exchange has been established between several Latvian and Portuguese higher education institutions. The Ambassador of Portugal mentioned that Portuguese universities accept many foreign students including those from Latvia, whilst Latvia is also a destination for Portuguese students within exchange programmes.
Ambassador Silveira Borges noted that possibilities should be considered to develop cooperation in tourism and the energy sector, especially in the field of renewable energy resources.
On 17 June, the incoming Ambassador of Portugal is to have meetings with the President of Latvia, Raimonds Vējonis, and the Deputy Speaker of the Saeima (the Latvian Parliament), Inese Lībiņa-Egnere.
