On April 14, ended the visit of the President Egils Levits to Portugal. The state visit took place from April 11-14 and during it there was a meeting with the President of Portugal Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the Speaker of the Portuguese Parliament Augusto Santos Silva and the leaders of the factions.
During the meeting with the President of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, President Egils Levits discussed current European challenges, the need to strengthen NATO, including its Eastern flank, discussing the g. the meeting of the leaders of the NATO member states in Vilnius in June and the strengthening of cooperation between the two countries. EU relations with the Far East, Latin America, and the African continent were discussed.
On April 13, the delegation participated in the Portugal-Latvia Business Forum and a memorandum of understanding was signed between the world-renowned biomedical research fund “Champalimaud Fundação” and three scientific institutions of Latvia – Paula Stradiņš Clinical University Hospital, Riga Stradiņš University and Riga Technical University. The agreement envisages cooperation in developing innovative technologies and paradigms in the field of breast cancer. On April 14, at the end of the visit, a memorandum of understanding between the 2027 European capitals of culture – Évora and Liepāja was solemnly signed in the city of Évora, which was signed by the mayor of Évora, Carlos Pinto de Sá, and the mayor of Liepāja, Gunārs Ansiņš.
President Egils Levits was accompanied by representatives of more than 40 different companies during his state visit to Portugal. The previous state visit of the President of Latvia to Portugal took place 20 years ago.
